How to Hide the new “Cookie Preferences” note in Your Footer
Squarespace just rolled out some updates to the Cookie Banner (July 2024), so if you have a cookie banner enabled (which you probably should) you may have noticed some unattractive text or even a solid box at the bottom of your site that unceremoniously says Cookie Preferences.
It probably doesn’t match your site’s cute styles and it may even cover up some of your other footer content! (Annoying!) Let’s get rid of it.

Before you delete: Why is it there?
Now there are some great reasons it’s here: This extra feature allows your visitors to always have access to manage their cookie preferences at any time (not just upon arrival to your site) and to manage more specific preferences than just a blanket Accept or Decline.
If you have a cookie banner enabled, you might be totally delighted by these customization options, or you may find it (mostly) redundant and you might not like how it looks on your site always hanging out in your footer, maybe even covering up some of your other footer content like this!
If you feel it’s unnecessary and it cramps your style, then this tutorial is for you.
Quick Fix: Step by Step
Settings
Cookies and Data Privacy
scroll down to Saved Preferences
set the layout to Hidden
click Save
What if I want to set up a Cookie Banner?
In case you’ve been looking, the Cookie Banner customizations have moved, so to save you searching, you’ll go to Settings (on first click Website will be highlighted on the left) and in the main window go to Cookies and Data Privacy. This is where you can edit your text and make any customizations to the regular cookie banner that you want to display.
What does it do?
A cookie alert, banner, notice, etc. lets your users know that your site uses cookies, which is a fancy way to say that it saves little pieces of information about how your visitors use your site, and technically it should give your visitor two clear options, both for Accept and Decline (not just Accept). This is not legal advice, but it’s a conglomeration of best practices I’ve picked up in my travels.
Heads Up!
If you’re like me and you just delete the label “Cookie Preferences” but you don’t set the layout to Hidden, it may still show as a small box with no text, so if you really want it gone, I recommend setting it to Hidden altogether.
Will that hide my Cookie Banner, too?
Nope! This fix, setting the Saved Preference Layout to Hidden, doesn’t hide your cookie banner that you set up by toggling it on up top and editing the banner text, it just hides this extra note in the footer.
Congratulations! You saved the day!
Now you have control over how your Cookie Preferences are offered to your visitors and you can make sure your footer is just as stylin’ as the day you built it. Way to go!
